History of Temple Shalom Softball League (established 1975)
Some members of the Temple Shalom Brotherhood decided it might be fun to create a Softball League. They put out the word to see who wanted to play. Sixty players showed up. So down to Churchill Park they went, every Sunday morning from April through August. They drafted teams and played a schedule. Initially they played fast pitch. There were no written rules. They donate the League proceeds to the Temple Youth and Teen programs.
34 years later...
Two Hundred and eight players enjoy an eleven week schedule of doubleheaders every Sunday morning. The season starts in late March and rages through the Texas summer heat. We conclude each season with a postseason tournament, an All-Star Game and a Veteran's/Old-Timers game. As the League has grown in size, we've moved to new fields three times and have found a first-class home at Heritage Yards Softball Complex in Plano. Players range in age from their mid-20's to some who have played all 34 years. Recently we've begun honoring our most dedicated players with enshrinement in a newly formed Hall of Fame. All summer long wives, children, parents and grandparents enjoy family time together watching Shalom League Softball.
34 years from now...
Who knows how many dozens of more players will have "jacked a tater", "turned a slick double play" or "stretched a clean triple into a double". An ever-evolving group of players serve as Captains and Committee members maintaining the effort required to ensure Shalom League's on-going success well into the future.
