... Captain's CornerNov 1, 2011, 11:10 pmExpress 21 Hooks 9
The Express relished in the time off by wrapping up the regular season with a sweep starting with Barker’s Captain Hooks as we put up our highest scoring production of the season – 23 hits and 21 runs. Huge game for Jamey Newberg who went 4 for 4 with 4 runs scored and an RBI and Jeremy Pease who went 3 for 4 with 2 HR’s, a 2B, 4 runs scored and 8 RBI’s. Nic Anderson (3 for 4, HR, 3 RBI, 3 Runs), John Banta (3 for 3, 3 RBI, 2 Runs) and Scott Sulzer (3 for 4, 2 RBI, 1 Run) also had big days at the plate. Steve Uman (2 for 4, 2 Runs, RBI), Clint Hauck (2 for 4, RBI) and Alan London (2 for 3, BB, 2B, 2 Runs, 2 RBI) each contributed solidly with a couple hits while Lewis Zwick chipped in with a hit and 2 runs scored.
Express 10 Rangers 7
Seeking revenge, the minor leaguers took on the parent club in a rematch from October 2nd . The mighty Rangers, still sulking from their World Series defeat, were dazzled by big lefty Scott Sulzer on the mound as they were only able to plate 7 runs for the game. The good guys did most of their damage early on as we scored 8 runs in the first two innings and added 2 more in the 5th to complete the scoring. John Banta continued his perfect day by going 3 for 3 including 2 opposite field doubles against the shift, 3 RBI’s and 2 runs scored. Jamey Newberg (2 for 3, BB, 2 Runs), Jeremy Pease (2 for 4, Run), Nic Anderson (2 for 3, 2 RBI’s, 2 Runs), Scott Sulzer (2 for 2, Sac, 2 RBI’s, Run), Clint Hauck (2 for 3, RBI, Run), Mike Sheppard (2 for 3), Steve Uman (1 for 3 RBI, Run)and Alan London (1 for 2, Sac, RBI) all came up with timely hits that either drove in a run or scored a run. Overall, a great team effort in both games as the 2 wins moved the Express up from 6th place to a #4 seed in the playoffs.
Top Hitting Statistics for the day:
Jamey Newberg: 6/7, BB, RBI, 6 Runs Scored Jeremy Pease: 5/8, 2HR, 8 RBI’s, 5 Runs Scored Nic Anaderson: 5/7, HR, 5 RBI’s, 5 Runs Scored John Banta: 6/6, 3 Doubles, 6 RBI’s, 4 Runs Scored Scott Sulzer: 5/6, Sac, 3 RBI’s, 2 Runs Scored Oct 5, 2011, 6:19 pmRangers 33 and Hooks 6
In our first game, we were back to our old shenanigans putting up 33 offensively and holding the Hook’s to 6 defensively. Nothing too exciting here; just consistent performances by stringing together hit after hit as a team. Some highlights do include: Jeff Lewin and Sanjay Pant both going 6 for 6, and John Burke knocking in over a fifth of our runs with 7 RBI’s. Everyone contributed today and we hope to continue this run into the playoffs.
Rangers 15 and Express 6
In our second game, we got off to a quick start putting up 5 runs right off the bat. David Tennyson led off the game with an inside the park grand slam, but unfortunately it was due to Dale Burleson’s season ending injury which we all wish him the best on his recovery. We slowed down until the end of the game when we put up another 9 runs in the final inning. We must have been a little tired from the previous game. Highlights include Tennyson’s 6 RBI’s , Larry Farin going 3 – 4, Jeff Lewin 3 -4 with 2 RBI’s, John Miller hustling out the play and scoring 3 times, Bob Davis 2 – 3, and once again everyone on the team contributed to at least one run whether it was crossing the plate or an RBI. The team, as a whole, put together these two wins, and we hope to continue this team performance down the stretch as well. Oct 4, 2011, 8:22 pmExpress 12 – Brewers 21
Game 1 had the once again short-handed Rangers minor league affiliate taking on the mighty Brewers led by aging pitching wonder and interim skipper John “Don Sutton” Unell. The Don, throwing every doctored pitch he had in his arsenal held the young Express team to 4 runs through 4 innings with RBI’s by Zane Belyea (2-4, 2B, RBI and 2 RS), Steve Uman (3-3, SAC, 3 RBI’s and 2 RS) and a 2-run fence shot by John Banta (4-4, 3 HR’s, 2B, 6 RBI’s and 4 RS) . The old man on the bump began to tire as the entire lineup batted in the 5th inning while putting up a 5 spot. Hits by Jamey Newberg (2-4, 2 RS) and Jeremy Pease (2-4, 2 RS) set the table for another Banta HR over the right field fence. Continuing, a 2B by Belyea, an RBI single by Uman, a single by Scott Sulzer (3-4) and an RBI single by Alan London (2-3, SAC, 2 RBI’s) capped the scoring in the fifth. Unell, with a fairly high pitch count and a comfortable lead, opted to turn the last inning over to an original Seattle Pilot, Art “Jim Bouton” Rothenburg who hadn’t pitched since the franchise was founded in 1969. Art promptly gave up a lead-off single to Newberg before retiring rookie sensation Pease. Catcher Larry Goldstein asked for a 3rd HR by Banta (since he had never seen 3 HR’s in one game) who promptly obliged by drilling a Rothenburg Vagisil ball over the RCF fence. Hits by Belyea, Clint Hauck (1-3, BB), Sulzer and a SAC by Uman, closed out the scoring. Dustin Madlock (2-3) and Dale Burleson (1-3) helped contribute to the Express’ season high 24 hits. We look forward to seeing skipper Adam DeLisse back for the playoffs after serving the first 2 game suspension in Temple Shalom Softball History for use of a banned PED. DeLisse successfully appealed his rest-of-the-season suspension by providing letters from no less than 24 TSSL doctors stating that his use of HGH was a required medical prescription for his Achilles rehab and newly chiseled frame. Commish Wayne Casper ruled that DeLisse could only return for the playoffs if he attended a “How To” seminar in Canada this weekend sponsored by Dr. Tony Galea and an unknown masking agent manufacturer. DeLisse agreed to the seminar as he thought the guest speaker list may include former US Postal Service Pro Cycling Team Member Lan……Never mind. See you in the playoffs Adam!
Rangers 15 – Express 7
Game 2 had the AAA Express taking on the 2nd place parent club in a Decker Dollar Dog extravaganza that featured rookie skipper Aaron Kahn and his band of veterans. The Rangers, currently leading the league in runs scored and averaging 20 per game, were held to a paltry 15. Unfortunately, the little leaguers could only muster 7 runs of their own. To make matters worse, we lost Dale Burleson, fresh off of his Hawaiian Vacation, in the 1st inning to a season ending hamstring tear. It was great having Dale on the team and we all wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him in the spring. As for the game, we jumped out to a quick 4 run lead in the top of the 1st lead by a Jamey Newberg in the park HR and followed by a Jeremy Pease 3B. However, we could only scratch out 3 more runs over the next 5 innings as the Round Rockers couldn’t string enough of their 18 hits together to keep it close. The Express were lead by Jamey Newberg (2-4, HR, 2B, RBI, 2 RS) Jeremy Pease (4-4, 3B, RS), Clint Hauck (2-3, RS), Steve Uman (2-3, 2B, 2 RS, RBI), Scott Sulzer (2-3, RBI), Alan London (2-3, 2 RBI), Zane Belyea (2-4, RS) and Lewis Zwick (1-3). Thanks again to Zane Belyea for coming out and getting in some swings and holding down LF.
